Planning a run before the wall closes
Set out isolation properly. A valve at the entry to each bathroom and kitchen, plus angle valves at the fittings themselves, means a future repair affects one room instead of the whole house. This is the cheapest thing you will ever add to a plumbing layout and the one most often left out.
Keep supply and drainage thinking separate. Supply runs are small-bore and under pressure, so joints matter; drainage runs are larger, rely on fall rather than pressure, and go wrong when that fall is compromised to make a route neater.
Mark where everything runs. A photograph of every open wall before it is closed, kept with the house papers, is worth more than any drawing when somebody has to drill into that wall in five years' time.
