Where each kind of tile belongs
Bathrooms and washing areas want a matt or textured floor tile. Grip matters more than shine on a wet floor, and a textured surface hides watermarks between cleans. Walls in the same room can safely be glossier, because nobody stands on them.
Kitchens take heat, oil and constant wiping. A dense, low-porosity floor tile and a wipeable wall tile behind the counter will still look right after a few years of cooking.
Living rooms, halls and bedrooms are where large-format and decorative tiles earn their keep. Fewer joints make a floor look calmer and larger, and one patterned wall does more for a room than a patterned floor throughout.
Whatever you pick, buy a little more than the room measures. Cuts at the edges, future repairs and the occasional breakage all come out of the same box, and dye lots vary between batches.

Which tile finish is right for a bathroom floor?
A matt or textured finish. It keeps grip when the floor is wet and does not show watermarks the way a high-gloss tile does. Save gloss for the walls.
How much extra should I order?
Allow for edge cuts, wastage and a few spare tiles for later repairs. Shades vary between production batches, so buying the shortfall months later rarely matches.
