Choosing the right material for the work
Concrete wants coarse aggregate that is graded rather than all one size, because a spread of sizes packs together with less paste between the stones. Filling work is less fussy — what matters there is that it compacts and drains.
Masonry and plaster want clean, well-graded sand. Plaster is the least forgiving of the three: silty sand shows up as shrinkage cracks and a surface that never quite takes paint evenly, and by then the wall is finished.
Store aggregate on a hard, drained patch and keep the heaps apart. Sand that has spread into the stone, or either of them into the mud, stops being the material you paid for. A sheet of plastic under a heap costs nothing.
Order against the pour, not against the month. Aggregate takes a lot of room, gets walked through and washed about, and a heap that sits for weeks in the open is rarely as clean as the one you inspected.
