What the steel is actually doing

Working from the structural drawing
The bar sizes, the number of bars and the ring spacing should come from your structural drawing or your engineer, never from what the neighbour used. Every house has its own spans, loads and soil, and reinforcement is the one part of a build where copying is genuinely risky. Bring the schedule to the counter and we will work through the list against it.
Order a little over the measured lengths. Laps, bends and cutting waste all consume steel that the schedule's clean numbers do not show, and running short mid-pour is a far worse problem than a small surplus.
Keep the steel off the ground and covered before it goes in. Surface rust from a few days in the open is normal and not a problem; steel that has sat in mud or standing water for weeks is a different matter.
Get the cover blocks in. They are small, cheap and the only thing holding the cage off the shuttering at the right distance. Without them the steel ends up against the form and the cover that protects it from corrosion simply is not there.
